Longest-Lasting Cars Still on the Road with Over 200,000 Miles
While regular maintenance and good driving habits help increase the lifespan of a vehicle, there are cars, trucks and SUVs that have been proven to be reliable and reach 200,000 miles and over. From an analysis of over 11.8 million pre-owned cars sold in 2020, iSeeCars found a mix of vehicle types with 10 SUVs (including a hybrid), three pickup trucks, one sedan, one minivan, and one hybrid hatchback made the top 16 models, with each having at least over 2.5 percent of their vehicles reach 200,000 miles. The average for all vehicles reaching over 200,000 miles is just one percent.
Toyota dominated as the top brand in all categories, including pickups. The study found Toyotas and full-size sports utility vehicles are the longest-lasting vehicles that are most likely to reach 200,000 miles or more. Toyota has six of the top 10 models, Chevrolet has two models, and GMC and Ford each have one model.
Truck-based SUVs represent the majority on the list with Toyota’s Land Cruiser, the brand’s SUV flagship, garnering the top spot as the longest lasting vehicle, with 16.3 percent of these vehicles with odometers over 200,000 miles. The Toyota Sequoia was second as 11.2 percent of these models currently on the road have been driven over 200,000 miles.
The percentage of longest lasting cars on the list drops with six U.S. full-size SUVs next on the list. The Chevrolet Suburban ranked fourth and Ford Expedition, fifth, with 5.1 percent and 4.9 percent, respectively, of these vehicles reaching over 200,000 miles. The Chevrolet Tahoe was seventh, the GMC Yukon XL ranked 10th, and GMC Yukon 12th. The Lincoln Navigator, the lone luxury car on 15th, with 2.6 percent driven over 200,000 miles.
The Avalon, also by Toyota, was the only one sedan that made the list, ranking sixth, with 3.9 percent of vehicles reaching over 200,000 miles. The Highlander Hybrid, which ranked eighth, was the only crossover. Toyota Prius made 16th, with 2.6 percent of this model still on the road after 200,000 miles.
The only minivan on the list was the Honda Odyssey. Ranked 13th, 2.9 percent of this minivan racked over 200,000 miles.
According to the car search engine six pickups rate above the 1.9 percent average for the vehicle class. Top ranked was the Toyota Tundra, Honda Ridgeline was second and the third-ranked was the Toyota Tacoma, having 3.7 percent, 3.4 percent and 2.8 percent, respectively, of their kind over 200,000 miles.
While the brands are commended for their durability and reliability, a pre-emptive maintenance schedule, good driving habits, and keeping the vehicle out of the harsh weather and road conditions also contribute to extending the life of a vehicle.
