How To Maintain Your Vehicle
Whether pre-owned or new, the key to keeping a vehicle healthy and you happy and safe is regular maintenance. Neglecting regular maintenance on your car can lead to a breakdown or, worse yet, a bad accident. It could cost you a lot of money, if not your life.
Here are priorities you need to check regularly to keep your vehicle well-maintained, increase its life span and keep your safe on the road:
Oil
Get an oil change regularly at intervals recommended by the vehicle manufacturer. Don’t risk going over the required period. And if you happen to see the oil light on, stop the car immediately. You may ruin the car if you keep driving it.
Air Filter
While you’re getting your vehicle’s oil changed, get the air filter checked. If it’s dirty, get it replaced. A clogged air filter can affect the fuel efficiency of your vehicle.
Tires
Improperly inflated tires can cause a flat tire and leave you stranded on the road or lead to an accident. The wrong tire pressure can also affect the fuel efficiency of your car. Buy a tire pressure gauge and check your tires regularly. Keep your tire pressure according to the manufacturer’s recommendation. Also have the tires rotated regularly and check the thread. A worn out tire can cause a blowout which could lead to a serious accident.
Brakes
Your brakes keep you safe on the road. It’s too risky to have them fail, so have them checked regularly. Don’t wait until they screech and wear out your brake pads.
Lights
Always check all your lights – headlights, brake light, tail lights and turn signal lights. These lights help you see at night, when it’s raining or foggy. Most importantly, they let other motorists see you.
Fluids
The power steering fluid, transmission fluid, coolant/antifreeze keep your vehicle running smoothly. Keep these fluids at the right level and changed periodically. Like your oil, they need to be part of your regular maintenance check.
Appearance
Keep your car clean and smelling good by regularly washing, waxing and vacuuming your car. Dirt and grime that stays long on your car will cause scratches and ultimately damage the coating. Clean the upholstery and shampoo the mats, as well.
Pay Attention to Recalls
Manufacturers regularly check their vehicles for driving and safety issues. If you receive a recall notice in the mail, don’t wait. Bring the car to the dealership right away and get the issue taken care of.
If you keep your vehicle in good running condition, it will last longer, you will spend less money on repairs, and it will keep you safe on the road.
